How we met
We got set up by our parents on a blind date. Enough said.
Ok, so you want to know more? One Sunday afternoon after church Jen and her parents were talking with Tom and Veronica Misener, Matt's parents. Jen had recently returned from the University Maryland and was explaining to the Miseners how she was in the process of finding a job. Her father decided to add to her story, and stated that she was also looking for a man!
Veronica then turned to Jen and asked how she felt about younger men. Upon asking "How much younger?" it was revealed that this "younger man" was one and a half years younger than Jen. And then came the clincher. Veronica said that it was her son...and he was 6'4". Jen quickly and
enthusiastically
replied, "sign me up!"
Veronica went home that day and told Matt about this girl that he should call. However, it was not until Jen's mom continued to give Veronica updates on Jen's whereabouts that Veronica realized that this might have been more than just joking around!
It took Matt about 3 more weeks to call Jen and ask her out for coffee. They went to Second Cup on their first date...for 3.5 hours. And that was how it began...
How we got engaged
Matt totally surprised me (Jen) on Christmas day. We had talked about marriage the week before Christmas and agreed that the upcoming fall would be a good time to get married. However, we also talked about how it would be fun to go ring shopping together first to get an idea of what I liked. We decided we should start looking for a ring within the next couple of months. During this conversation Matt also wanted to make it very clear that there wouldn't be an engagement over Christmas...because at that point it wasn't going to be! The only thing I requested was that it be a surprise.
Two days later Christmas arrives. I was scheduled to arrive at the Misener farm at 9:30 for breakfast. About 30 minutes before I get to the farm, Matt decides that he wants to propose...that morning!! Veronica was very quick to offer the use of one of her engagement rings (she has two rings because she lost one at one point and then found it years later). Of course Matt took her up on the offer and go to work! He unwrapped the christmas present he had got for me, put the ring in the bottom of a charm box, and wrapped it back up like new.
When I went to open my present, I immediately recognized the charm box and knew what Matt had gotten me. To both of our surprises, when I opened the box there was nothing there! The charm had fallen out when Matt was rewrapping the gift! This "mistake" worked out perfectly because I went looking for the charm underneath the top layer....and there was the ring!!!! Matt got down on one knee and said..."Merry Christmas, Marry me?" After several minutes of tears and shock, and a casual reminder that I had forgot to give him an answer, I said YES! |
